Antonio Pappano, music director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, has been knighted, but apart from that one high-profile honour, classical musicians are thin on the ground in the New Year Honours. The philanthropist Ian Stoutzker has been awarded a CBE. Ronald Corp, the composer and founder and artistic director of the New London Orchestra has received an OBE.

An MBE went to Ralph Allwood, former precentor and director of music at Eton College, and the moving spirit behind the Eton Choral Courses since their foundation in 1980. The composer John Metcalf also received an MBE. There were awards for a number of people recognised for their role in music in the community.
